Reporting Life Changes to the Marketplace As They Happen

It is very important to report household income and family size changes to the Marketplace or state exchange throughout the year as they happen. Reporting changes will help make sure you get the proper type and amount of subsidies and will help you avoid getting too much or too little advance premium payments. If you receive too much or too little in advance premium payments by not accurately reporting household income or family size changes as they happen, this will affect your refund or balance due when you file your federal income tax return.

NOTE: It is also important to keep your mailing address updated with the Marketplace or state exchange since they will be sending you tax forms that are REQUIRED to prepare your federal income tax return!

Changes You Should Report To The Marketplace or State Exchange Immediately Include:

  • Birth or Adoption

  • Marriage or Divorce

  • Moving to a New Primary Residence

  • Changes in Household Income

  • Change in Disability Status

  • Become Pregnant

  • Incarceration or Release from Incarceration

  • Gaining or Losing Healthcare Coverage or Eligibility

  • Other Changes Affecting Household Income or Household Size

NOTE: These changes may also open the door for the special enrollment period that permits health care plan changes. In most cases, the special enrollment period for Marketplace or state exchange coverage is open for 60 days from the date of the life event.
